Meet a New Furry Friend on Vacation
Studies have shown that interacting with animals helps reduce stress and lower blood pressure, decrease anxiety and increase exercise. Even just 10 minutes of petting a dog or cat has shown to have significant benefits. I think that's why so many of us hold our pets so dear to our hearts - maybe even more fondly than some of the humans in our lives... Most people don't take their pets on vacation with them - my cats can't handle the five minute ride to the vet without screeching their heads off. I can't imagine what they would be like on a plane or long road trip. But what if you could foster a local puppy for the day while enjoying your vacation? Things may look a little different right now because of COVID, so be sure to check with the organization for more information on their current programs.
Mutual Rescue Doggy Day Out encourages people to take dogs out in the community or on field trips for the day. They do require minimal training commitments, so you will want to check to see if training from one location will transfer to another location; but, there are shelters all over the US and Canada that typically participate.
On some Caribbean islands, the locals eat a mixture of congealed peas and rice and will then feed the overcooked rice stuck to the bottom of the pan, "potcake", to the dogs. The potcake dog is a mixed-breed dog type found throughout the islands, and thousands roam the sandy beaches. In Nassau alone, it's estimated that there are 5,000 to 8,000 stray potcakes.
Known as an ultimate dive location, Turks and Caicos has some of the beaches in the world. In fact, Grace Bay Beach often wins awards for "Best Beach Destination". A trip there can feel like you've found paradise and things probably couldn't much better. But what if you could enjoy all that AND spend the day playing with an adorable puppy on the beach? Potcake Palce, a dog rescue based in Providenciales, allows people to adopt a puppy for a day. And all the puppies that are part of the program are available for permanent adoption...
When people dream of Hawaii, they dream of an unforgettable stay enjoying some of the most beautiful sights in the world. What if you could enjoy a hike along the beach or on a path such as Kauai Coastal Trail with a furry friend for the day? As the Kauai Human Society says on their website, "the main goal of the program is for visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the lovely Garden Island and get your "dog fix" by taking along one of the shelter dogs on your adventure." You're allowed to take your foster friend to any dog-friendly beach or path, and the shelter is located near the Kauai airport and close to many of the island's premier destinations.
